Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, was born within Long Beach California. In her early years, DuVernay's Aunt Denise helped her develop a love for artwork and inspiration. The actress worked as a late night nurse so that she could give her aunt to have the time she needed in her day for the love of theatre, literature, and art. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she was able to introduce her. DuVernay was taught by her the power of art as an avenue for action. DuVernay grew up with parents who were socially aware and showed her how to utilize the arts as a means to express herself. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and was raised. Her father recalled watching the Civil Rights marches that were historic over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in close proximity to Selma Alabama. DuVernay would make use of the summers she spent there to inspire her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay earned her high school diploma at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She then attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she was awarded degrees in English and African American studies. DuVernay started producing for the broadcast industry while she was still at school. DuVernay was a journalist intern at CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay was assigned to observe the house of one of the jurors of the jury, and then look through their trash. When she was dissatisfied with journalism by the tasks she was assigned, she decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay started her career working as a junior press assistant in a tiny film studio just after she had graduated from college. From this position she started her own public relations company named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Her agency launched a number of lifestyle and promotion networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
